Once complete, it will deliver at least 550 new homes, including 57 affordable houses, making it the single largest housing development in the region.

The brownfield site – the former Coke Works, which operated from 1912 until its closure in 2014 and central to Corrimal’s history – will enter a new chapter.

The development is an eight-minute walk or a two-minute drive from Corrimal train station. It means people can live close to public transport, jobs, and services.

Projects like this are central to delivering more homes where they’re needed most, while making sure they’re supported by infrastructure and open space.

Future stages of the project will be considered State Significant Development under the Housing Delivery Authority, showing just how important this project is for meeting the housing needs of our state.

Plans include the preservation and adaptive reuse of the iconic 1912 brick chimney stack and parts of the original coke ovens, which will sit at the heart this development. This will become a gathering place for cafés, small businesses, and community facilities.

It will also be Wollongong’s first 5-Star Green Star rated community - More than half the site will be retained as green and public open space, with over 150,000 native trees and plants along Towradgi Creek, new biodiversity corridors, walking and cycling links, and even a bush tucker trail celebrating First Nations culture. This development will set a new benchmark for sustainable urban renewal in the Illawarra.

During construction, The Works will generate around $750 million in economic activity and support more than 2,400 jobs. And once the community is complete, new residents will contribute over $30 million every year to the local economy.
