Windang Road’s speed limit will drop by 10 kilometres per hour through Windang CBD on 29 May 2017.
The changes follow a review by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and the Centre for Road Safety following a series of motor vehicle accidents and a fatality last year.
The review has concluded that the speed limit will be cut from 70 kilometres an hour to 60 kilometres an hour through the Windang CBD.
The new 60 kilometres per hour speed limit will start for southbound motorists near the Windang golf range and continue for 40 metres beyond Fern Street.
Northbound motorists will experience the new 60 kilometres per hour speed limit start 40 metres south of Fern Street and finish 80 metres north of Wattle Street.
Wollongong MP, Paul Scully surveyed Windang residents earlier this year and found 85 per cent of residents were in favour of a reduction in the speed limit Windang CBD.
Comments attributable to Paul Scully MP:
“I welcome the decision to reduce the Windang Road speed limit from 70 kilometres per hour to 60 kilometres an hour approaching the Windang CBD.
“Last year 18,000 motor vehicles used the Windang Road every day.
“In the last 5 years, there have been 42 crashes along this stretch of Windang Road and last year a young man’s life was tragically lost.
“As part of the effort to make Windang Road safer, I surveyed every household in Windang earlier this year and an overwhelming 85 per cent of residents indicated they wanted a drop in the speed limit through the CBD.
“Cutting the speed limit will help make Windang Road safer for both motorists and pedestrians.”
