Wake up Geoff - Fellow Minister calls for upgrade to Wollongong Entertainment Centre

16 April 2021

The Minister for Local Government and South Coast MP Shelley Hancock has told the Government to “actually do something” and spend “lots of money” upgrading the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.

Ms Hancock, a Senior Cabinet Minister, told a press conference on Monday:

“I would love to see WIN Entertainment Centre upgraded and lots of money spent on it.

“But it’s not up to me, I don’t hold the reigns for the funding for that, but I certainly endorse its upgrading and hope that the relevant Ministers will actually do something about it because I think it’s gone too far quite frankly.”

Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully today welcomed Ms Hancock’s comments and said the Minister for Sport, Dr Geoff Lee MP should heed the views of his ministerial colleague.

“Shelley Hancock is dead right on the need to upgrade the Wollongong Entertainment Centre.

“She has made it crystal clear and these are her words – not mine: “I would love to see WIN Entertainment Centre upgraded and lots of money spent on it.”

“Minister Lee should take the advice of his Cabinet colleague and –again her words, not mine: the relevant Ministers will actually do something about it because I think it’s gone too far quite frankly.

“I want to thank Ms Hancock for endorsing my calls to upgrade the WEC

“The Minister for Families and Communities, Gareth Ward and Member for Heathcote, Lee Evans should have the guts to back their region and tell Minister Lee the same thing”.

“Just as there was bipartisan support and lobbying for Shellharbour Hospital to be a greenfields site, there should be the same show of regional unity on the WEC upgrade”, he said

Mr Scully said it was not too late for the Government to invest in the upgrade of the WEC in the forthcoming June budget.
