Unanderra Station upgrade on track

11 June 2021

The contract for the upgrade and installation of the lifts at Unanderra Station is expected to be awarded next month, Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully, said today.

Degnan Constructions has been awarded the contract to complete a detailed design of the Unanderra Station upgrade.

It has been revealed that once the final detailed design of the project has been completed up to 75 construction workers will be employed.

Approximately 30 design and construction personnel are employed on the project now.

Qualified trades to be performed by apprentices and recognised trainees will also be involved in the design and construction phase of the project.

Mr Scully said that he expects to see a substantial funding allocation for Unanderra Station in the NSW Budget to be handed down on 22 June 2021.

However, Mr Scully said he was disappointed to learn that the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government was refusing to guarantee any local steel content on the upgrade of Unanderra Station.

“It is pleasing to know the detailed design work is under way and a contract to start construction will be awarded in July.

“I am sure however that the local community will share my dismay that the Government is unable to guarantee a role for locally produced quality steel in the upgrade of Unanderra Station.

“I mean the biggest steel producer in the state is just down the road from Unanderra Station, for goodness sake.

“NSW Labor has a clear NSW Made policy which will maximise the use of local content in all publicly funded infrastructure projects.

“It is really very disappointing that the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government cannot show the same commitment to investing in local jobs and local businesses”, he said.
