Member for Wollongong Paul Scully today moved a Notice of Motion calling on the NSW Government to match Labor’s $50 million pledge to upgrade the Wollongong Entertainment Centre (WEC).

Mr Scully’s motion will now be debated and voted on the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

The Notice of Motion states:

I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move that this House notes that:

  1. NSW Labor has pledged to invest $50 million towards the upgrade of the Wollongong Entertainment Centre (WEC).
  2. The WEC has not undergone a major upgrade since its construction by the Carr Government.
  3. Upgrading the WEC will deliver 280 direct jobs, create an additional $12 million in regional economic benefit and help attract close to 40,000 visitors to Wollongong annually.
  4. Calls on the Government to match the $50 million investment pledge by NSW Labor.

Comments attributable to Paul Scully MP:

“We’ve got a music legend, Sir Elton John coming to the WEC in September.

“We’re going to have thousands of his fans turn up to the WEC to enjoy all that Elton has to offer.

“Labor has already put a $50 million funding pledge on the table to upgrade the WEC during the Wollongong by-election.

“It’s time the NSW Government matched Labor’s funding commitment.

“I will use the opportunity of a debate on the floor of the NSW Parliament to pressure the NSW Government to allocate funding to upgrade the WEC.

“The NSW Government won’t be able to blow like a candle in the wind in this debate.”
