PRINCE ANDREW AND SIR ELTON JOHN VISIT WOLLONGONG MORE OFTEN THAN THE NSW TREASURER DOES

27 October 2017

Wollongong has hosted more royal visits than visits from NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet since his elevation to the Treasury portfolio last January.

Wollongong has hosted more royal visits than visits from NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet since his elevation to the Treasury portfolio last January.

In response to a Question on Notice from the Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully, as to when the Treasurer had last visited Wollongong and what the purpose of the visit was, the Treasurer directed Mr Scully to his published Ministerial diary.

The Treasurer’s published Ministerial diaries commencing on 24 January 2017 do not indicate that he has visited Wollongong or met with any Wollongong-based stakeholders.

Mr Scully has written to the Treasurer expressing his concern that he does not appear to have visited the city or the region since he was last here in early 2016 and has offered to convene a meeting of stakeholders in the region that would allow the Treasurer to be briefed on the key infrastructure initiatives that warrant his attention.

Mr Scully also offered to arrange a tour of the city and take the Treasurer to Unanderra Station so that he could see first-hand the difficulties that people face in accessing trains at the local station.

Comments attributable to Paul Scully MP:

“It concerns me that our city has been able to host royal and pop star visits more often than a visit from the NSW Treasurer.

“I don’t want the region to be forgotten by the Treasurer as he commences the task of preparing the next NSW Budget, so I am making the offer to host a meeting of regional stakeholders to brief him on our priorities and take him on a tour of the city.

“He has never visited Wollongong in his capacity as Treasurer and I think he would find the strength of our arguments about the need for the Berejiklian Government to invest in the region compelling.

“Wollongong and the Illawarra have fantastic potential and I want to make sure the Treasurer knows it and has the opportunity to see what we need first-hand.

“All he has to do is set a date and I will look after the rest.”
