PREMIER UNABLE TO POINT TO ONE SINGLE BENEFIT FROM $2.5 BILLION SYDNEY STADIA KNOCK DOWN FOR WOLLONGONG

20 March 2018

Premier Gladys Bereijiklian has been unable to point to one single benefit from her Government’s plans to spend $2.5 billion knocking over and rebuilding Sydney stadia in an answer to a question on notice from Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully.

Premier Gladys Bereijiklian has been unable to point to one single benefit from her Government’s plans to spend $2.5 billion knocking over and rebuilding Sydney stadia in an answer to a question on notice from Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully.

The Premier was asked a simple question on the 8 February 2018:

What are the specific benefits to the Illawarra region of the Government's $2.5 billion proposal to knock-down and rebuild Sydney stadiums?

Her answer came 35-days later on 15 March 2018:

The Governments stadia investment will ensure New South Wales remains the number one destination for major sporting and entertainment events, creating jobs and generating economic activity across the State.

This is the second time the Premier has been asked to point to a single project that benefits the Wollongong from her Government’s plans and she has been unable to point to any.

Ms Berejiklian was asked on 10 August last year to point to what projects the Government has invested in the Illawarra following the $20 billion sale of electricity ‘poles and wires’.

The Premier has had 70 days to provide answers and she can’t point to a single one.

It comes on the back of the Deputy Premier’s inability to identify a single benefit to areas outside of Sydney when he was asked the same question on 7 February 2018.

Comments attributable to Paul Scully MP:

“The Premier can’t point to a single benefit for the Illawarra from her plans to waste $2.5 billion on knocking down Sydney stadia.

“Last year, the Premier was unable to point to a single project her Government invested in Wollongong from the $20 billion sale of electricity ‘poles and wires’ even though we eligible for funding from this funding source.

“The Premier is never shy to spruik the money the Government spends but after 70 days since I asked her two very simple questions, she’s been unable to point to a single project in Wollongong which benefited from the sale of poles and wires, or the benefit to our region of knocking down Sydney stadia.

“In contrast, NSW Labor has already announced $225 million to support projects in Wollongong under its Illawarra Jobs Action Plan.”
