PREMIER MUST GUARANTEE WOLLONGONG PUBLIC SECTOR JOBS SPARED FROM CUTS

June 17, 2019

There are calls ahead of the NSW Budget tomorrow for the Premier to guarantee that Wollongong public sector jobs will be spared from any cuts.

A number of media reports this morning note that the Berejiklian Government will announce tomorrow that up to 2500 public sector jobs will disappear at the stroke of a pen.

This will mean that there will be increasing pressure on frontline workers in our schools and our hospitals, which are already doing more with less and less support.

This decision is penny-pinching and robbing Peter to pay Paul.

During the March 2019 election, neither the Premier nor the Treasurer let the public in on their secret plan to cut 2500 jobs just weeks after they said NSW “could have it all.”

Wollongong MP, Paul Scully wrote to the Premier in April requesting she quarantine any proposed public sector job cuts in Wollongong.  He never got a response.

Mr Scully has also said he expects the Budget papers to show a clear funding timetable for the delivery of the Government’s election promise to finally build the Unanderra Station lifts.

Comments attributable to Paul Scully MP:

“We now know that tomorrow’s budget will drop the axe on 2500 public sector jobs.

“I’m repeating my call to the Premier to guarantee that not a single one of the 2500 jobs to be cut by her Government will come from Wollongong.

“The Berejiklian Government does not have a mandate from the election to cut any jobs in New South Wales.

“In fact, the Premier herself promised the electorate at the election that we “could have it all.”

“I expect that the budget papers will fully allocate the funds promised and set a concrete timeline for the start of work to finally build the lifts at Unanderra Station.”
