Documents released to the NSW Labor opposition under freedom of Information laws have revealed that the electorate of Keira has over 63 demountable classrooms, Wollongong has 12 and Shellharbour has 40.
NSW Shadow Treasurer and State Labor Members for Ryan Park, Paul Scully and Anna Watson have expressed his frustration at these figures as the NSW Government spends $2.3bn on a stadium splurge.
This $2.3bn is on top of the $870,000 that has been spent to cart these demountable classrooms around the state instead of investing in new classrooms or school maintenance.
Many of these demountable classrooms are still in their 20+ year old condition whiles Sydney Stadiums, less than 20 years old are getting a $2.3bn facelift.
Quotes attributable to Member for Keira Ryan Park
“Demountables are supposed to be a temporary solution, this has turned into Glady Berejiklian’s vision for NSW schools, it simply isn’t good enough”
“It is unbelievable that the NSW Government would splurge this amount of money on Sydney stadiums while using band-aid solutions instead of investing the funds needed in NSW Schools.”
“This is a Government and a Premier that not only fails the fairness test but also fails the common sense test.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Wollongong Paul Scully
“It’s hard to believe that students are sitting in more than 4,000 demountables that are older than 20 years.
“The Government is wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars simply shifting demountables around the state rather than building classrooms – it doesn’t make sense!
“A Labor Government will prioritise schools before stadiums.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson
“This Government has its priorities all wrong–spending billions on stadiums whilst school children have been left with barely a blade of grass to play on due to this explosion of demountables in our schools.
“The Government is not building nearly enough new schools to cater for a growing school aged population.
“Dapto Public School, located in West Dapto, is already bursting at the seams, with 14 demountable classrooms currently on-site. With projected enrolments for this school expected to reach 1065 by 2036, the number of demountables on site could be set to double.
“The excessive use of demountables in our schools is a sign of poor planning and short-sightedness by this Government.
