Neary 50 new homes built in Sydney’s North-West as major renewal moves to next stage

30 May 2026

The renewal of social housing in Sydney’s north-west is well underway, with nearly 50 new homes recently completed as Stage 1A of the Telopea Renewal project receives planning approval.

Under the Minns Labor Government’s record-breaking $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW Program, the NSW Government is delivering large scale housing renewals at Telopea, Waterloo, Bellambi (Wollongong), and Tolland (Wagga Wagga).

The Telopea Renewal was first announced in 2019 by the former Liberal-National government but the dud deal that put profits over people stalled due to long delays and rising costs.

The Minns Government tore up that deal, rescoped the renewal with a larger percentage of public homes, and provided the funding to get started sooner.

Stage 1A of the Telopea Renewal will now deliver 423 new homes including 146 social homes, 99 affordable homes and 178 private homes on the vacant Polding Place site.

The planning approval also enables delivery of a new 6,000 m2 community plaza and neighbourhood park adjacent to the light rail stop, with play equipment, BBQ and picnic areas outdoor seating as well as road and pathway upgrades adjacent to the new homes.

The Telopea Renewal will be delivered in stages over the coming years, with demolition beginning in the coming months and construction expected to start in early 2027.

While the larger renewal progresses, the NSW Government is also delivering more new homes in Telopea to boost housing supply sooner, including:

  • 21 social homes at Sophie Street, which have already welcomed 41 new residents
  • 27 social homes at Evans Road nearing completion, providing a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom homes close to public transport and essential services.

Together, these developments are providing 48 new social homes in Telopea ahead of the larger renewal stages commencing.

It also follows the refurbishment of 148 public homes in the Wade Street towers, which were completed in late 2025 just in time for hundreds of new residents to move in for Christmas.

All these projects have been made possible thanks to the Minns Labor Government’s historic investment in public housing, which has already delivered more than 3,500 new social and affordable homes for the people of NSW.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully:

“This is a major milestone for the renewal of Telopea, setting out a clear path for delivering more than 400 new homes alongside high‑quality public spaces and improved connections to transport.

“The project will deliver a mix of social, affordable and market homes, supported by major upgrades to public spaces including a 6,000‑square‑metre arrival plaza and neighbourhood park that will create a welcoming gateway to the light rail and much‑needed open space for local residents.

“We’re delivering more homes while shaping a modern, connected and sustainable neighbourhood with upgraded infrastructure and high‑quality public spaces that will serve Telopea for decades.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson:

“If you’re looking for an example of the Minns Government’s plan for tackling the housing crisis, look no further than Telopea in Sydney’s north-west.

“Telopea was previously dubbed a ghost suburb thanks to a shocker deal signed by the former government which saw the renewal stalled and hundreds of homes empty sitting empty for years during a housing crisis.

“We tore up that deal, redrew the renewal plans, and started delivering new social homes today. I’m so thrilled that Telopea is now getting the transformation it deserves.

“Where we can, we will always consider renovations like we’ve done at the ‘The Three Sisters’ on Wade Street, which allowed us to move people into upgraded homes quickly.

“By delivering a large-scale renewal alongside smaller housing projects, we’re boosting housing supply faster and ensuring communities like Telopea keep growing and thriving.”
