Minister finally rules out WIN Stadium sell-off after 12 days

23 March 2021

Member for Wollongong Paul Scully has welcomed a letter from the Minister for Sport Dr Geoff Lee finally ruling out – after 12 days - any plan to sell-off of any part of WIN Stadium, WIN Entertainment Centre “…or any other part of the wider precinct.”

Mr Scully wrote to the Minister on 8 March 2021, following a newspaper article published in the Sunday Telegraph on 7 March 2021, under the headline, “WIN Stadium confidence eroding”.

The article reported a “government study has found rust issues in the grandstand” and that “a recommendation will be put to the government to bulldoze the stadium and sell off the land as prime beachfront real estate.”

The Minister’s letter states, “There are no grandstand safety concerns and similarly no long-term concerns about the ground’s ability to host major sport or entertainment events.”

“I welcome the Minister’s letter after I called on him to make the Government’s position very clear given the speculation sparked by the article in the Sunday Telegraph earlier this month.

“However, it’s taken the Minister 12 days of silence to rule out something that he should have ruled out within 24 hours of its report.

“I repeat my call again for the Minister to make the necessary investments to upgrade WIN Entertainment Centre so it can continue to be the prime cultural, sport and event facility in the state’s third largest city”, Mr Scully said.
