As part of the NSW Government’s commitment to building better communities, the new park at Bank Street will provide open space for the community and will be the first of many public benefits that will be delivered as part of the renewal of Blackwattle Bay.
A formal process to officially name the park will begin shortly, with construction to begin next year.
This park will be next door to the new Blackwattle Bay precinct, which will contain 1500 new homes.
Earlier this year an Expressions of Interest process opened, seeking a development partner to renew the 3.6 hectare precinct and parcel of government-owned land currently home to the Sydney Fish Market.
The new park will feature a stunning section of the foreshore promenade and will ultimately form part of a 15-kilometre continuous harbourside walk between Woolloomooloo and Rozelle Bay, one of Australia’s longest harbourfront walkways and a ‘must see’ attraction in Sydney.
Other key features of the park include:
- A permanent outdoor multi-purpose sports court
- Inclusive play space and fitness stations
- Water access and storage for dragon boats
- New launch jetty for recreational paddle craft
- A new café by the water and public amenities
- Adaptive reuse of some of the buildings along Bank Street.
The park has been designed by award winning landscape architects OCULUS with Collins + Turner, Greenaway Architects, and Greenshoot Consulting, and is underpinned by First Nation’s design principles of healing, revealing and caring for Country.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:
“This land has been locked off from the community for decades, as planning approval has been granted to build this park, the land can now be returned to the community.
“This milestone means we can now find a partner to build the park so the community can enjoy it at the earliest opportunity.
“Making sure we have accessible and high-quality public spaces in our cities is key to improving people’s lifestyles.
“This new park will be the first piece in the wider development of Blackwattle Bay and making Sydney Harbour more accessible for leisure activities, including private paddle craft, walking and cycling.”
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said:
“Today’s announcement is an important milestone and a win for the local community and visitors to Blackwattle Bay.
“The NSW Government is focused on not only building more housing, but building better communities. This park will transform Blackwattle Bay and will provide water access and a place to play and relax on Sydney’s iconic waterfront.
“This park will be a meeting place for the community and visitors alike and will be a premier waterfront park where you can take a kayak or paddleboard right up to a café and walk along the foreshore, and it’s right on the doorstep of the Sydney Fish Market.”
Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich said:
“After two decades of advocacy and engagement, the community’s hard work and dedication has paid off with their vision to make Bank Street a prime waterfront destination finally to be realised.
“Bank Street is bursting with potential and I’m excited to see it transformed into a recreational haven for the expanding Pyrmont population and something the wider community can celebrate.”
