CHALLENGE TO WOLLONGONG BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS TO HOST A HOMELESS HUB MEAL

31 October 2019

As we heard into the Christmas season, Illawarra Labor MPs have put out a challenge to businesses and community groups to host a lunch or dinner at the Homeless Hub.

As we head into the Christmas season, Illawarra Labor MPs have put out a challenge to businesses and community groups to host a lunch or dinner at the Homeless Hub.

This week, Illawarra Labor MPs and Labor branch members hosted a bbq for Homeless Hub staff and clients.  The MPs dined with over 50 Homeless Hub clients and staff and provided over 200 home cooked takeaway meals for clients.

Paul Scully, Ryan Park and Anna Watson barbequed 50 steaks and 50 rissoles and 2kg of onions, while Illawarra Young Labor members chipped in with all the salads for the Build Your Own Burger Bar.  Woolworths Figtree kindly donated 100 bread rolls for the event.

Labor members bought a mouth-watering range of side dishes and desserts including pasta, moussaka, butter chicken, chicken wings, zucchini slice, vegetable fried rice, brownies, ice cream, cheesecake, cakes and slices.

Sharon Bird’s team also recruited local hairdressers, owner Kevin Crane and staff member Nat, from Broken Glass Hair in Port Kembla to provide free haircuts for clients.  The pair lost count of the number of haircuts, shaves and styles they did in two hours.

Labor MPs and branch members also donated much-needed non-perishable items including UHT milk, sugar, rice, pasta, noodles, lentils, pasta sauce and stir fry sauce to help stock the cupboards at the Hub following high demand over winter.

The Homeless Hub is also looking for homewares to help tenants as they transition to new accommodation.

The Labor MPs encourage businesses and community groups to host a lunch or dinner at the Hub.

Any interested businesses should contact Mandy Booker at the Homeless Hub on 4228 0955.  Non-perishable food items and homewares can be dropped in to 75-79 Keira Street, Wollongong.
