Brighter future for local sport with sporting field lighting upgrades

Three local sporting fields will benefit from lighting upgrades that will allow for extended playing and training hours, improved safety for players and spectators, and enhanced capacity to host higher-level competitions, including state and national events because of funding from the Minns Labor Government.

Through the Project Support Program, $410,000 will be provided for lighting upgrades at:

JJ Kelly Park, Wollongong - Coniston Football Club will receive $100,000 for a full LED lighting upgrade at its home ground.
Webb Park, Kanahooka - Lakeside Lions Junior Soccer Club will receive $220,000 for the installation of two new light poles, along with LED upgrades to existing lighting and control systems.
Sid Parrish Park, Figtree - Western Suburbs Senior Rugby League Football Club will receive $90,000 for a sports field lighting upgrade.

The lighting upgrades will provide for modern LED lighting technology which will also reduce the cost of running the lights for the clubs while delivering improved lighting quality for training and match play.

This announcement follows last week's commitment of $610,000 for irrigation upgrades at Berkeley Park, Darcy Wentworth Park and McKinnon Park.

Lighting upgrades at these grounds are in addition to funding secured for lighting upgrades at other local sporting facilities including:

King George V Oval, Port Kembla
Windang Tennis Club
Figtree Bowling Club
Wisemans Park, Gwynneville
Wetherall Park, Primbee

Vikings Oval, Wollongong
Berkeley Sports Club
John Crehan Park, Cringila

Together, these lighting and irrigation projects represent an investment of more than $1 million in local sporting infrastructure, helping to improve the quality, sustainability and accessibility of community sports facilities across the Wollongong electorate.

Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said:

"This investment will help our clubs train later, play safer and host bigger nighttime events right here in Wollongong.

"Upgrading to LED lighting is a win for local sport. It means more access for participants, safer conditions for players and families, and lower energy costs for volunteer-run clubs.

"These projects are about backing grassroots sport and the volunteers who make it possible.

“They will also help strengthen Wollongong's reputation as a destination for major sporting competitions, bringing more visitors and economic activity to our community."
